Recovery and follow-up

The early weeks

After surgery, your thumb is protected while the wound heals. Your team will advise you on splint use, managing swelling, wound care and gentle exercises. Specialist hand therapy helps restore movement safely.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery varies with the operation, your general health, the demands of work and everyday activities, and your rehabilitation. Light activities may resume earlier than heavier gripping, lifting or sport. Mr Naqui and your hand therapist will provide a personalised plan, including advice on driving and returning to work.

Building strength and confidence

Grip and pinch strength generally continue to improve over the months after surgery. Graded hand exercises support a steady return to the activities that matter to you.

Driving, work and hobbies

Your return depends on your work, the demands of the activity and your progress. Driving requires safe control of your vehicle and appropriate clearance; check with your surgeon and insurer. Don’t resume heavy lifting before your team advises it is safe.

Recovery times vary. These are general expectations, not personalised instructions. Always follow the plan provided by your surgeon and hand therapist.

Recovering away from home

A clearer understanding of your thumb arthritis options starts with a specialist consultation.
